Ronan O’Gara Not Interested In Munster Return But Eyeing Up Another Irish Job

Not going back.

Ronan O’Gara is currently settling into his new role with the Crusaders in New Zealand, having linked up with the Super Rugby side three weeks ago as their new backs coach.

The former Ireland and Munster playmaker had been working with Racing 92 in France since retiring in 2013, eventually ending up as their defence coach, having started off in a kicking role.

O’Gara has been linked with a return to Munster on a number of occasions, with many feeling he’s on a coaching path around the world that will eventually lead back to the southern province. Well not according to the man himself.

In an interview with the NZ Herald, O’Gara says a return to Munster does not appeal to him. But he would be interested if an opportunity to coach Ireland in some capacity, if they came calling down the line.

“I enjoyed playing in Munster but I don’t think coaching the players you played with is a good idea. I didn’t want that so there’s not a big draw to ever go back there.

“If the opportunity with Ireland presents itself it’s a different decision. At the minute I’m at a massive club with a big responsibility and something that really interests me. I enjoy the day-to-day coaching and interaction with the players and international rugby is very different. You need to be hugely experienced to do that and I’m not that.”

There you have it. A lot can change, but it appears the Munster legend isn’t really interested in ever returning to the two-time European champions.
