Win-win situation.

Former Crusaders boss Robbie Deans has back Ronan O’Gara as the right man to replace Leon MacDonald as assistant to head coach Scott Robertson.

O’Gara is currently contracted as defence coach with French giants Racing 92, but has admitted that discussions are underway between him and the current Super Rugby champions.

Deans reckons the former Ireland and Munster playmaker would be an excellent appointment for the New Zealand franchise.

“It hasn’t been confirmed yet, but if that is what they are seeking to do I can understand it,” said Deans.

“They lost a good man in Leon. Scott Robertson is obviously looking to replace him and it’s not a silly idea to seek some cross-pollination. A different voice and a different approach maybe.

“It would be stimulating for the group. They are an experienced group, they have got good leadership, so that sort of stimulation is good,” 

Deans reckons O’Gara has the experience to make a difference, have done his time with Racing. The former Wallabies boss says it’s a win-win situation for everybody involved.

“He is a very experienced player and coach now,” added Deans.

“He would be a great injection to the group. Ronan is respected down in New Zealand for his history and he would be going into a great vehicle.

“It’s a great opportunity for him and it’s a win-win situation for everyone involved really.”
