Here’s What Munster & Ulster Need To Secure A Home Champions Cup Quarter Final
All to play for.
Munster and Ulster could join Leinster in having a home Champions Cup quarter final, leaving the Irish provinces with three of the four available should results go their way.
Ulster are currently top of their pool, one point ahead of La Rochelle and will need to match or better any result the French side get in order to stay top. Les Kiss’ men however, must go on the road to take on Wasp, while La Rochelle have a home fixture to look forward to.
Johann van Graan’s Munster meanwhile host Castres in Thomond Park, who are all but out already, despite their try-bonus win over Leicester with Racing having won the weekend.
At the moment only Leinster are guaranteed a home quarter final, with Clermont likely to join them. The French giants have Ospreys at home in their final game, and and form of win will guarantee them a home quarter final.
After that things get tricky, with five teams in with a realistic chance of claiming one of the final two quarter final spots- Toulon, Scarlets, Munster Ulster and La Rochelle.
Scarlets host Toulon in a winner goes through match, although a losing bonus-point might just be enough for Toulon depending on other results. A try-bonus win for either will secure a home quarter.
So for Ulster to claim a home quarter final, they will need to beat Wasps with a try-bonus and hope that whoever wins the Scarlets vs Toulon match doesn’t get the try bonus. This also means they’re guaranteed to stay ahead of La Rochelle.
Munster will also need a try-bonus, but need Scarlets to win without a try-bonus. Should Toulon claim any kind of win, Munster won’t be able to catch them. Munster will also need to to beat both Scarlets and La Rochelle on points difference. At the moment Munster trail Scarlets by one point, but are nine points ahead of La Rochelle.
So….. for Munster and Ulster to BOTH claim home quarter finals, results need to be as follows.
- Scarlets defeat Toulon without try-bonus.
- Ulster beat Wasps with try-bonus.
- Munster beat Castres with try-bonus.
- Munster end up with a better points difference than Scarlets (-1 currently) and La Rochelle (+9 currently)
Assuming Clermont beat Ospreys… then this is how the table will look:
Leinster – 23-28 points.
Clermont – 22-23 points
Ulster – 22 points
Munster – 21 points
Scarlets – 21 points
La Rochelle – 21 points
It’s gonna be some weekend and we cannot wait!
