Scarlets playmaker Rhys Patchell says he’s been taking inspiration from Paul O’Connell’s autobiography. Patchell will start at outhalf for Wales this Saturday for the first time, with injuries to Dan Biggar and Rhys Priestland paving the way for him to make his mark.

Patchell has been hugely impressive for Scarlets since making the switch from Cardiff, become an integral member of one of the most exciting backline’s in world rugby. He credits Paul O’Connell for helping him become the player he is today.

Speaking following Wales’ team announcement for their Six Nations opener with Scotland, Patchell says O’Connell’s words about “winning the moment in front of your face”, have become a big focus in his career.

“The big thing compared to years gone by is that I’ve just learned to worry about what’s in front of you,” said Patchell.

“Interestingly, I was reading Paul O’Connell’s autobiography last night and he was talking about winning the moment in front of your face and that’s been a big focus over the past 12 or 18 months – just, on a daily basis, worrying about whatever I can look after.

“If it’s out of my control, then it’s out of my control but as long as I win the little moments in front of my face, things will hopefully go in the right direction.”
