Joey Carberry Had An Interesting Response When Asked About Possible Ulster Loan
Wanted man.
Leinster star Joey Carbery returned to training this week, as he continues to recover from a broken wrist sustained while on Ireland duty back in November.
Carbery picked up the injury while playing against Fiji at the Aviva, in his favoured position of outhalf. Before he was forced to spend some time on the sidelines, a debate had begun about where he would play upon returning to Leinster.
Last season saw Carbery fill in for Rob Kearney at fullback, putting in some excellent performances in the fifteen jersey. That’s all well and good, but the problem is, Joe Schmidt wants him as Johnny Sexton’s understudy for Ireland.
Ross Byrne has been filling in at that role for Leinster, so when Carbery does return, where will he play? Well Leinster might not have to worry about that if the IRFU can facilitate a loan move for the talented playmaker.
Ulster are set be without a recognised ten come the end of the month, with director of rugby Les Kiss confirming he would explore the possibility of temporarily loaning someone like Carbery until the end of the season.
Carbery hasn’t been approached by anyone in Leinster about a move, but says he may consider it. Speaking at a Life Style even yesterday, Carbery says no one has approached him about it yet.
“I haven’t considered it,” says Carbery.
“If someone from Leinster came up and said it to me, then maybe I would consider it. But the chat has only come from the media so I’m not paying too much attention to it, to be honest.”
Realistically it’s probably not going to happen, but it’s interesting to hear that Carbery would be interested in exploring a deal along these lines in order to get more game time at ten.
Ulster realistically need to bring someone in who won’t be involved in the Six Nations, and Carbery no doubt will play a role for Ireland off the bench.
