Here’s How Peter O’Mahony Found Out He Was Captain For The Lions’ First Test

Shocked.

Peter O’Mahony has revealed that Warren Gatland did not pull him aside before the first Test against the All Blacks to let him know he would be captain.

The Munster and Ireland back-row recently spoke to Luke Fitzgerald and Will Slattery on the Left Wing, and revealed that he initially thought he hadn’t even made the team. Gatland announced he was captain when the squad was being read out.

“Before the (first) Test he didn’t say anything to me.” O’Mahony said.
“I thought I was out to be honest, because normally you’d obviously be asked that and the fact that I wasn’t, I presumed I wasn’t gonna be playing. Then he named the team with captain after me. So that was a bit of a shock.”

Asked when how he dealt with such a shock, O’Mahony said:

“It’s funny, when that happens you’ve about five minutes to kind of be shocked and then you’ve about a day and a half, two days before one of the biggest Tests of your life.”
