Over the last couple of seasons it’s become more and more commonplace for Irish players to move within the provinces in search of some regular game time.

We’ve seen Jordi Murphy recently sign for Ulster, John Cooney leave Connacht just to name two. It makes a hell of a lot of sense as it makes the provinces more competitive, all while keeping the best talent in Ireland.

Here are five players we reckon could potentially move to a rival province to further their careers.

Mike Sherry – Munster to Connacht

The Limerick man was one of the best hookers in the country before a number of injuries took their toll on him over the last couple of season. Currently finds himself as Munster’s fifth choice hooker, a move to the west could revitalise his career.

Conor Oliver – Munster to Connacht

Currently out injured, but was hugely impressive last year. Providing Munster can retain O’Mahony and Stander, and with Chris Cloete coming in, it’s going to be difficult for him to break back into the Munster team. A hugely exciting talent that could become a start at Connacht, who are set to lose Jake Heenan and potentially John Muldoon.

Ross Byrne – Leinster to Ulster

It’s no secret Ulster need an outhalf. With everything that’s going on with Paddy Jackson, we’re not sure when or if he will be back. Either way Ulster need another ten and a move for Byrne would benefit everyone. He will get more game time and it opens up a spot for Joey Carbery to play more time at 10 for Leinster.

Tommy Bowe – Ulster to Connacht

Has successfully made the switch to 13 this season with Ulster and could potentially do a job there alongside Bundee Aki with Connacht. He may be past his best, but his contract is up at the end of the season and perhaps a switch would do him the world of good. Just his experience alone in the Connacht dressing room would be hugely beneficial.

Ian Nagle – Leinster to Munster

The former Munster lock has struggled to make an impact with Leinster since returning to rugby. A move back home could help him get his career back on track with Munster still in need of another lock on top of the impending arrival of Tadhg Beirne.
